Razov tallies in Chivas' win over Red Bulls
Jul 27, 2007 - 3:06 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Ante Razov got the better of his former team.Razov scored a goal and assisted on another as Chivas USA topped the New York Red Bulls, 2-0, on Thursday.
A member of the Red Bulls in 2005, Razov opening the scoring for Chivas with a goal in the 38th minute and helped salt the game away by assisting on Sacha Kljestan's goal in the 87th minute.
"Ante did a pretty good job today and had a hand on both goals," Chivas coach Preki said. "We played very discipline and organized and the couple chances we had, we scored. It's a pretty good to start to the (four-game) road trip, beating a tough team."
It is the first time Chivas has beaten the Red Bulls, who had owned a 2-0-2 advantage in the all-time series. Additionally, Chivas (8-5-3) had come into Giants Stadium with a 1-5-2 road record and was 0-2-1 in its last three games away from home.
In tallying his sixth goal of the season, Razov took a crossing pass from teammate Maykel Galindo and outjumped Red Bulls defender Seth Stammler for a header to get the ball by the outstretched arms of goaltender Jon Conway.
It was Razov's sixth goal of the season and the 104th in his MLS career. He is just four goals behind the all-time leaders, Jaime Moreno and Jason Kreis, who have 108 apiece.
Razov capped the win late in the second half when he made a through pass down the middle of the field to Kljestan, who beat Red Bulls defender Hunter Freeman before blasting a shot past Conway from 14 yards out.
"It's a good way to start off the road trip," Razov said. "I'm not happy with the way I played, but with chances I had, I had to score. It was a great ball by Galindo for me to score and Sacha made a good play to score the second goal."
The Red Bulls (8-7-4) had several chances to score during the game, but could not break through against netminder Brad Guzan and the Chivas defense.
In the 17th minute, Juan Pablo Angel's header off a corner was deflected by Guzan and, with the goaltender out of position, Stammler had a chance to capitalize but his shot went wide of the net. Early in the second half, Jozy Altidore launched a shot off a tap-pass from John Wolyniec but hit the crossbar.
Angel, the 2007 All-Star Game MVP who was returning from a one-game suspension (red card), has not scored a goal in his last last five game. Prior to that, he had scored a goal in six straight games.
"Today was a strange game," Angel said. "We made some mistakes and we got punished for it. In general, we're a better team than we played today. The chances were there but we just couldn't score."
Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena went with the three-forward attack of Angel, Altidore and Wolyniec for the first time since the team earned a 3-0 win at home against the Chicago Fire on May 24. The strategy did not pay off on Thursday - New York outshot Chivas, 19-6, but only, 7-6, on net.
"We created a lot of chances and we just couldn't score," Arena said. "The first goal was good enough for them and they kept us off the board. The three-forward formation wasn't good enough and I just wanted to see how it looked."
The Red Bulls are off until August 12 against Toronto FC.
