Kirvorski helps Rapids continue home dominance over Revolution
Aug 17, 2007 - 4:37 AM COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (Ticker) -- Jovan Kirovski made sure the New England Revolution's latest trip to Colorado ended the same way the previous five did.Kirovski scored a pair of first-half goals and Omar Cummings added a late goal as the Colorado Rapids maintained their home dominance of the Revolution in a 3-0 victory on Thursday.
Kirovski scored in the 11th minute on a rebound and added another goal on a penalty kick in the 42nd minute for Colorado, which has beaten New England (10-5-6) six straight times here.
Colorado (6-9-6) continued to play well against tough competition, beating a first-place team for the second time in six days. The Rapids snapped a 10-game winless streak with a win over Houston on Saturday.
"The team played really well from the first minute," Kirovski said. "Tonight was great for us. We are not afraid of anybody."
In a scoreless game, Colin Clark headed a corner kick from the left side of the box to Conor Casey, who blasted a shot that was saved by goalie Matt Reis. Reis came out to the right and dove to stop the shot and Kirovski slid in and kicked the rebound into an open net.
Kirovski made the score 2-0 in the 42nd minute, as he blasted a penalty kick into the right side as Reis dove to the left.
"We will celebrate this win for an hour," Clark said. "But next Sunday, we have Los Angeles coming in, and it's another game at home for us with good fans and another chance to run a team into the ground and get a good result."
Colorado, which controlled play and outshot New England, 17-5, pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 76th minute. Cummings took a pass from Clark and beat Reis to the left side.
"We really didn't come to play today," New England coach Steve Nicol said. "When you come in at halftime 2-0 down and you are playing away from home, you're climbing a mountain."
Buona Coundoul stopped four shots for Colorado, which won for just the second time in 11 games.
"We kept putting pressure (on them)," Colorado coach Fernando Clavijo said. "We forced mistakes instead of waiting for them to make mistakes, and I think the end result was clear."
