Emilio nets two goals as DC United edges New England
Sep 10, 2007 - 12:23 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Luciano Emilio scored two second-half goals as DC United pulled out a 4-2 victory over the New England Revolution in a heated contest on Sunday afternoon.Jamie Moreno and Fred scored a goal apiece for DC United (13-6-4), which secured the victory despite racking up 20 fouls.
Emilio snapped a 2-2 tie with a tally in the 67th minute. But after the goal, tempers flared as Revolution coach Steve Nichols was ejected immediately following the score for arguing a non-call.
Nichols ran up the sideline and protested a hard tackle which he felt led to the goal.
"I was angry over the non-call on a foul by Olsen leading up to the go ahead goal," Nichols said. "It's one thing to make a bad call or a non-call but its another thing when it leads up to the game winning goal."
Emilio added some insurance in the 83rd minute, heading a crossing pass from Brian Carroll into the left corner of the net to provide the final margin.
"Well, the first (goal) was lucky," Emilio said. "The second one I anticipated the New England defensive switch and headed right up the middle and Carrol found me for the header."
"I was pleased with our second half effort, it makes a difference when you can substitute veteran players late in a game, this was the difference today," DC United coach Tom Soehn said. "Most teams do not have the luxury of doing this."
Taylor Twellman and Jay Heaps each scored for the Revolution (12-5-6), who managed just 10 shots.
