Moreno scores twice, propels D.C. United past Real

Apr 27, 2008 - 4:46 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jaime Moreno did what he does best on Saturday - twice, in fact.

Moreno converted his Major League Soccer all-time best 34th and 35th penalty kicks as D.C. United cruised to a 4-1 victory over Real Salt Lake at RFK Memorial Stadium.

"It's just one of those things. I'm good at it," Moreno said. "I'm lucky enough to score that many penalties, and I just have to keep working on it."

"He makes a living off PKs," Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando said. "I think he's made 203 career goals off PKs. No, especially at home, I'd say 100 percent. I just want to guess the right way and at least get a touch. But what are you going to do."

Forward Santino Quaranta and midfielder Marcelo Gallardo also tallied for D.C. United (2-3-0), which snapped a two-match losing streak.

Defender Carey Talley scored the lone goal for Real Salt Lake (1-3-1), which has lost all three of its matches on the road.

Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis was not thrilled after the game. When asked what his team needed to improve upon, Kreis said, "Scoring, results, everything."

After Real Salt Lake forward Dema Kovalenko was called for a handball in the penalty area in the 31st minute, Moreno was presented with a penalty kick. The 34-year-old calmly chipped the ball past Rimando to give D.C. United a 1-0 advantage.

Moreno struck again 20 minutes later, this time sending the ball just under the crossbar in the upper left corner for his third tally of the season and 115th of his career.

The talented veteran then showed his deft passing ability, lofting a feed which caught Quaranta in stride. The Baltimore native then slipped his right-footed shot past Rimando and inside the left goalpost for a 3-0 lead.

"Jamie leads in so many ways," D.C. United coach Tommy Soehn said. "The ball he sent over to Santino, a lot of guys don't recognize those passing situations and he just has a maturity about him that makes people around him better. He leads in so many ways, but his play is one of the best ways he can lead."

Tally put Real Salt Lake on the board in the 77th minute, but Gallardo responded three minutes later to cap the scoring.
