Final
Toronto FC, Galaxy play scoreless draw
May 16, 2010 - 5:39 AM CARSON, Calif.(AP) -- Stefan Frei made four saves in the final 17 minutes to help Toronto FC tie the Los Angeles Galaxy 0-0 on Saturday night.Toronto (3-4-1) earned its first point in five road games, while the Galaxy (7-0-2) maintained their best start since winning their first nine games in 1998.
"We deserved that point," Frei said. "Over 90 minutes, we worked extremely hard. That's what has been lacking for us on the road."
Frei made a diving save on Edson Buddle's 26-yard shot in the 73rd minute, and made three saves in second-half stoppage time. Frei used his left leg to block Mike Magee's 5-yard shot, made a one-handed diving save on Magee's 9-yard shot and blocked Todd Dunivant's attempt to convert the rebound.
"I just wanted to make sure that in the last two minutes, we weren't going to give that point away," Frei said. "We worked too hard to give that point away."
Buddle also had a rising 4-yard shot hit the crossbar in the 66th minute.
"They made it difficult on us," Dunivant said of Toronto. "We seemed a little tense. We didn't let the game flow. The result was a lot of balls that were misplayed."
Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders made his lone save by diving to his left to block Chad Barrett's 17-yard shot with both hands in the ninth minute.
Saunders made his first start of the year in place of Donovan Ricketts, who hyperextended his right elbow in practice earlier this week. Ricketts leads Major League Soccer with six shutouts.
Toronto played with 10 men after defender Maksim Usanov received his second yellow card in the 90th minute.
The game was Landon Donovan's last for the Galaxy before the World Cu p. The United States' national team will meet for a camp at Princeton, N.J., starting Monday, and will begin the World Cup in South Africa on June 12.
Buddle, who leads MLS with nine goals, will join Donovan at the camp. Both were selected to the 30-man preliminary roster Tuesday.
Toronto midfielder Julian DeGuzman was a late scratch from the starting lineup. DeGuzman injured a hamstring muscle Wednesday night in the Canadian Championship against Montreal. Martin Saric replaced him.
