Dynamo-Red Bulls Preview

Jun 2, 2010 - 2:37 PM By KATE HEDLIN STATS Writer

Houston (5-5-1) at New York (5-5-0), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Houston Dynamo failed to take advantage of a matchup against the team with the league's worst record in their last game.

Despite possibly missing two starting defenders, they hope to do a better job closing things out against another slumping opponent when they visit the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night.

Playing against one of MLS' worst teams wasn't enough to stop Houston's 10-game streak of alternating wins and losses. The Dynamo (5-5-1) fell 3-2 to Philadelphia on Saturday, giving the expansion Union their first road win and second overall victory.

Brian Ching scored off the bench in the second half to tie it at 1-all and Eddie Robinson gave Houston the lead in the 59th minute. Pat Onstad, though, gave up two more goals, allowing the winner 3 minutes into stoppage time.

"It's disappointing," coach Dominic Kinnear said. "To have a lead in the second half and play the way we did in the second half is a huge letdown for us."

The Dynamo also lost two of their starting defenders after Mike Chabala (strained right hamstring) and Robinson (dizziness) left in the 45th and 76th minutes, respectively. Their statuses for Wednesday are unknown.

Houston, which reached the West finals last season after finishing with the conference's best record, is tied for third place - 13 points behind undefeated Los Angeles.

"Being 5-5, a lot of teams would probably take that, but with the history we've had, we are all embarrassed here," Ching told the Dynamo's official website. "I'm just frustrated. I shake my head at it. The energy level is not good enough. .... Every one of us as players have to look at ourselves."

The Dynamo have responded from each of their losses this season with a shutout in their next game. They'll now get to face the Red Bulls, who have scored three goals while dropping four straight.

New York (5-5-0) got off to a hot start, but after allowing four goals in its first six games, the club has given up 11 in the last four.

The Red Bulls fell 3-2 at New England on Saturday after Bouna Coundoul gave up the winner in the 80th minute.

New York seemed to have grabbed momentum after taking a 2-1 lead on Juan Pablo Angel's goal in the 49th minute, but the Red Bulls were unable to take advantage of facing the Revolution's backup goalkeeper, who came in after their starter suffered a broken leg.

"We conceded goals we shouldn't have conceded, but we still managed to score two," Angel said. "When you play away from home and you score two goals, you should get something out of the game."

New York played down two men after losing defender Carlos Mendes and midfielder Roy Miller to red cards in the second half. They will both be suspended for this match.

These teams played to a pair of draws last season.
