Colorado salvages 1-1 tie with Kansas City
Jul 18, 2010 - 4:18 AM COMMERCE CITY, Colo.(AP) -- Conor Casey scored in the 74th minute and the Colorado Rapids tied 1-1 with Kansas City on Saturday night, keeping the Wizards winless in Colorado since 2004.Casey beat goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen with a left-footed shot from just outside the area for Colorado, which has four ties and a loss since June 5.
"He did a good job, jumping around and put a quick shot at me," Nielsen said. "One of the toughest shots for a goalkeeper is the quick shot that moves away from you."
Casey has seven of Colorado's 17 goals.
"We were flat, more than flat, we were timid," Colorado midfielder Pablo Mastroeni said. "For us to come out of a dog scrap like this speaks volumes for our team."
Davy Arnaud scored in the 20th minute for Kansas City, which last won in Colorado on June 9, 2004.
Kansas City has two ties in seven visits since then and is 1-8-6 overall at the Rapids.
Craig Rocastle found Arnaud alone along the sideline and the Wizards captain made a move on Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens just outside the crease before sending a low shot past Pickens' left hand.
Kei Kamara couldn't finish a chance to make it a two-goal lead early in the second half. His shot from inside the area went just right of the right post in the 54th minute.
Casey also hit the left post and missed a wide open net in the 89th minute.
"KC was better than us for a good period of the game," Colorado coach Gary Smith said. "Yet, Conor got us the goal to get us a point and nearly won it for us at the end."
