Wizards beat Galaxy 2-0 for 2 straight
Aug 29, 2010 - 5:43 AM CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Davy Arnaud and Jimmy Conrad scored to give the Kansas City Wizards a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.Goalkeeper Jimmy Neilsen made three saves for his eighth shutout as the Wizards (7-9-5) earned their first road victory against Los Angeles since 2004 and won consecutive games for the first time since the season's first two games.
"I would say that this was our best 90-minute performance we've had all season," Wizards coach Peter Vermes said. "The guys played every roll of the ball."
Vermes added that the Wizards' speed on the flanks proved decisive.
"The key for us was to make sure that we just didn't sit back and try to absorb pressure," Vermes said. "We have some pretty decent speed on the outside. If you don't respect that, sometimes those guys will hurt you."
The Galaxy (13-5-4) had its lead over second-place Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference shrink to three points.
"I just think we got out-competed," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "All this is about fighting and scrapping, and we lost that part of it. There were too many guys who didn't win their battles, and that was the difference in the outcome."
Los Angeles played without midfielder Juninho, who started 18 MLS games. Juninho is in Brazil because of visa problems.
"Hopefully, we can get him back this week," Arena said. "But that might not be the case."
Arnaud began the scoring in the 12th minute with his third goal. Conrad scored his first goal of the season in the 70th minute.
Conrad scored his first goal of the season in the 70th minute by using his left foot to poke Arnaud's free kick off the inside of the left post from 11 yards.
Nielsen kept the Galaxy scoreless by stopping Chris Birchall twice. Nielsen deflected Birchall's low 13-yard line drive with his right foot in the 50th minute, then blocked his 12-yard liner with both palms in the 58th.
Birchall will be suspended for the Sept. 4 game in Chicago after receiving a yellow card in the 69th minute.
