Razov, Kljestan help Chivas to season-opening win

Apr 8, 2007 - 5:55 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- Chivas USA's Ante Razov and Sacha Kljestan were too much for an expansion team to handle.

Razov and Kljestan each scored first-half goals to lead Chivas to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC in the season opener for both teams.

Chivas, which lost in the Western Conference semifinals to the eventual champion Houston Dynamo, spoiled a historic night for Toronto FC, which became the first Canadian team to play in the MLS.

Razov scored in the 35th minute on a 2-0 break with Maykel Galindo. Galindo deked the goaltender and slid a pass to Razov, who tapped it into the middle of the net.

"Razov and Galindo will make an excellent match up front," Chivas coach Preki said. "They are doing well and will only get better."

Kljestan scored from the top of the box on an assist from John Cunliffe in the 88th minute for a two-goal advantage.

Toronto had all four of its shots on goal in the first half, with its best scoring opportunity snuffed out by goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

After Guzan stopped a shot by Edson Buddle in the 16th minute, the rebound was gathered by Paulo Nagamura and Guzan saved that as well.

"There is a healthy competition for the starting goalkeeper's job between me and Preston (Burpo)," Guzan said. "It will help both of us do better."

"The team played strong in the first half," Toronto coach Mo Johnson said. "(We) lost momentum in the second and waited too long to get it back."

Chivas outshot Toronto, 17-5, and had 12 shots on goal. Guzan finished with four saves.
