Hartman notches MLS-record 63rd shutout

Apr 26, 2007 - 3:56 AM KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Kevin Hartman made MLS history with his latest victory in net.

Hartman set a league record with his 63rd career shutout as the Kansas City Wizards posted a 3-0 victory over expansion Toronto FC in the first game of a home-and-home series.

In making five saves in the shutout, Hartman broke a tie with the retired Tony Meola.

"It's great," Hartman said. "I especially respect the honor of being in the same group as a goalkeeper like Tony. To be anywhere near his records is an honor."

The shutout was Hartman's first for the Wizards after recording the first 62 of his career in nine years with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Toronto FC (0-3) has been outscored, 9-0, in the first three games this season.

"Tonight I thought we were certainly decent in some areas," Toronto coach Mo Johnston said. "But then we lose that certain goal and all of a sudden our heads go down. We've lost 2-0, 4-0, and 3-0 and right now, it's not good enough."

Eddie Johnson opened the scoring with his second goal of the season in the fifth minute. Sasha Victorine and Davy Armour assisted on the tally.

"We got what we were looking for," Johnson said. "We wanted to get out early. They (Toronto) didn't make it easy for us but we kept playing all 90 minutes. The attitude and mentality the last couple of games has been great."

The Wizards doubled their advantage on an unassisted goal by Kerry Zavagnin in the 55th minute - his first of the season. Yura Movsisyan capped the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 70th minute.

The goal by Zavagnin was his first since October 11, 2003, against, ironically, the Galaxy and Hartman.

"I probably haven't been in the box, in the attacking third, more than three or four times the last 20 games," Zavagnin said. "I was just fortunate the ball bounced right to me."

On Saturday, when the teams play the return match in Toronto, it will mark the grand opening of BMO Field for the franchise opener.

"It's a lot easier at home than away," Zavagnin said. "There's a lot of excitement in Toronto. It'll be a good atmosphere for them and they'll feed off the energy. We expect a much tougher game than we had tonight."
