Timbers, Revs battle to draw
Apr 3, 2011 - 1:52 AM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - The expansion Portland Timbers earned their first point in Major League Soccer with a 1-1 draw at the New England Revolution on Saturday at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution got the game's first goal in the 22nd minute when a ball was played into the Portland area from the right side, but headed back right up the middle by the defense. Stephen McCarthy volleyed the errant clearance, one-time from about 20 yards, into the right-post side-netting for his first goal of the season.
The Timbers got the equalizer about 15 minutes later, however, when Jack Jewsbury scored with a left-footed blast from just outside the Revs penalty area for his first goal of the season. Jeremy Hall got the assist on the play.
The draw improves the Timbers to 0-2-1 on the young season while New England (1-0-2) remains unbeaten in it's first three fixtures to start the campaign.
New England will aim to stay unbeaten in league play when it travels to take on another expansion team, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, on Wednesday, while Portland will look for its first win vs. Chicago in its next MLS fixture on April 14.
