United hands Portland first home loss in MLS

May 29, 2011 - 11:15 PM Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Chris Pontius and Josh Wolff both scored late in the second half as D.C. United handed the Portland Timbers their first home loss in Major League Soccer this season, 3-2, on Sunday at Jeld-Wen Field.

Perry Kitchen also scored for United, which overcame a strange sequence in the second half when Portland converted a penalty on its third attempt to even the score at 1-1.

Kenny Cooper had two straight penalty kicks saved by Bill Hamid, who was ruled to have come off his line early on both attempts, and Jack Jewsbury buried the third attempt in the 68th minute for the Timbers.

United answered when Pontius converted a penalty in the 75th and Wolff added a goal in the 85th, giving D.C. (4-4-3) the lead it needed to hold off Portland. Jorge Perlaza scored in the 88th for the Timbers (5-4-2), but it wasn't enough to preserve their unbeaten home record.

Portland had won its first four home games. United won away from home for just second time in five matches this season to extend its unbeaten streak to four.

D.C. visits the Los Angeles Galaxy on June 3 for its next match. Portland will also visit The Home Depot Center for its next game June 4 against Chivas USA.
