De Rasario, Ching lead second-half explosion in win
May 6, 2007 - 5:28 AM COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (Ticker) -- Good things just seem to happen lately for the Houston Dynamo when they meet the Colorado Rapids.Dwayne De Rasario scored twice and Brian Ching tallied as the Dynamo rallied to down the Rapids, 3-1, in a rematch of last season's Western Conference Championship.
In the 55th minute and Colorado leading, 1-0, Ching scored on a sliding kick on the left side as he took a pass from midfielder Brad Davis and grounded it past Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. The goal snapped a 270-minute scoreless streak and matched the output of last season's MLS Cup winners had through four contests.
"It was frustrating (the scoreless streak)," Ching said. "The frustration continues to build the longer you don't score. We just got back to what we're good at and put our hands down and worked hard. That makes us one of the better teams in the league and we didn't let the frustration get to us."
Ching scored Houston's first and only other goal entering this game, against Chivas USA in the second game of the season. Chivas finished with the fifth-highest amount of goals in the league last season, but only expansion club Toronto FC had less than its output before this contest.
De Rasario scored his first two goals of the season and put the game out of reach over the next 11 minutes, converting on a left-footed kick that went high left, sailing past Coundoul in the 63rd minute.
"It was a huge goal," De Rasario said. "I'm just happy that I was able to help my team in the victory. We worked very hard this week and wanted to get a good result."
The 29-year-old forward then picked up the scraps on the game's final goal, pushing in a rebound from less than a foot after the Dynamo had cleared out the Rapids goalkeeper with two other short-range attacks.
"To get those goals just means so much," De Rasario said. "Hopefully, the flood gates are open and we start to get rolling."
Houston's defense maintained its early-season dominance, as it has yet to surrender more than one goal in any game this season.
"We had good possession," Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said. "At halftime, I told the guys that we needed to get a goal but not to turn it into a track meet. I just wanted to make sure we didn't get desperate. I thought we came out with the right patience and attitude."
Roberto Brown scored the lone goal for the Rapids, who lost their first game this season at their new home, Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
