Lindpere's double helps New York claim draw with 'Quakes
Jul 3, 2011 - 4:47 AM Palo Alto, CA (Sports Network) - With Red Bull New York striker Thierry Henry unable to play on Saturday because he was suffering from flu-like symptoms, Joel Lindpere filled in quite capably with two goals, including the equalizer five minutes from time, in a 2-2 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford Stadium.Lindpere started early by putting New York ahead after seven minutes, but San Jose's Khari Stephenson leveled the match before halftime.
Steven Lenhart looked to have handed the Earthquakes all three points when he scored on a header in the 68th minute, but Lindpere benefited from a deflection in the 85th to salvage a point for his team.
Roy Miller's left-wing cross set up the opener when the ball found Lindpere 10 yards from goal. He then turned with it past a defender and easily beat San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Stephenson responded with his first goal of the season as New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul failed to hold a corner kick, leaving the San Jose man to smack the ball into the empty net from the middle of the area.
The hosts came within inches of taking the lead as Chris Wondolowski got into the penalty area on the right and beat Coundoul at his near post, only for the ball to come back off the woodwork.
But it took just one minute for San Jose to take the lead when a well- delivered cross from Steven Beitashour found Lenhart in front of goal, with the striker sending a powerful header past Coundoul.
However, the 'Quakes failed to hold the lead as a shot from Lindpere 20 yards from goal took a wicked deflection inside the area off of a San Jose defender, leaving Busch with no chance.
