RSL rallies for draw with Revs

Jul 5, 2011 - 2:44 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - After 16 minutes of play at Rio Tinto Stadium on Monday Real Salt Lake found itself down two goals and a man against the New England Revolution.

But RSL showed great resolve in rallying for a wild 3-3 draw that extends its unbeaten streak to five games and piles more misery on the Revs.

New England entered Monday's match having earned just two points from its last seven games, but the club couldn't have asked for a better start as the hosts were reduced to 10 men after just three minutes.

Benny Feilhaber raced into the penalty area and went down after a challenge from RSL's Nat Borchers. The Salt Lake defender appeared to make a good play on the ball, but referee Yader Reyes pointed to the penalty spot and handed Borchers a red card.

Rajko Lekic converted the subsequent penalty kick, and the Revs doubled their lead in the 16th minute when Chris Tierney's free kick found its way through the wall and inside the right post.

But that is when the home side went to work, with Will Johnson following up an Andy Williams free kick that struck the post to head the ball home midway through the first half.

New England's Kevin Alston then handled the ball inside his own penalty area early in the second half, which allowed Alvaro Saborio to fire home the equalizer from the spot.

A flicked header from New England's Shalrie Joseph in the 63rd minute restored the lead for the visitors, but Ryan Cochrane was sent off just a few minutes later after receiving his second yellow card, evening things up at 10 men apiece.

Salt Lake then went on the attack for the rest of the match, with Saborio heading a ball off the crossbar in the 68th minute before substitute Fabian Espindola came on and netted the equalizer seven minutes from time.

The rest of the match saw RSL press forward for the win, and although they failed to claim all three points, it still has to be a satisfying result for Jason Kreis' team considering their disastrous start.
