Galaxy's Perk saves PK to help preserve draw with Sounders
Jul 5, 2011 - 4:53 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Monday's game between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Seattle Sounders FC at The Home Depot Center ended in a 0-0 draw, with neither side really doing much to excite the 27,000 fans in attendance. But for Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk, Monday's match will always be memorable because the 21-year-old not only recorded a clean sheet in his MLS debut, but he saved a penalty kick to help his team preserve a point.
Perk was only in goal because regular starter Donovan Ricketts suffered an arm injury in last weekend's match and backup Josh Saunders was out through suspension after receiving a red card in the same game.
Perk had yet to really touch the ball when the 18th minute arrived and Seattle's Fredy Montero attempted an overhead kick that struck the arm of L.A. defender Omar Gonzalez, giving the Sounders a penalty kick.
Montero stepped to the spot and shot the ball toward the bottom-left corner of the net. But Perk reacted well, diving to his right to make the save, which also happened to be his first-ever save in MLS.
The Galaxy carved out a good chance shortly before halftime when Chad Barrett slipped a pass into the area for Juan Pablo Angel, but the Colombian turned with the ball and shot wide from 10 yards.
For the most part, the two sides canceled each other out time and again, with the best opportunity in the second half also falling to Angel, who forced a good diving save from Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller with 20 minutes to play.
L.A.'s unbeaten streak is extended to a league-high 11 games with the result, while Seattle, which had won its previous three matches, is now unbeaten in seven contests.
