Colorado battles to scoreless draw against RSL

Oct 15, 2011 - 5:24 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - Separated by only six points in the Western Conference, there was little between the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake on Friday, as the Rocky Mountain rivals battled to a 0-0 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Real Salt Lake has already clinched a postseason berth, but entered the match with a four-game losing skid.

While that streak was snapped, Real Salt Lake is still winless in its last five regular season games, narrowly holding on to third place in the Western Conference and the final automatic qualification spot for the playoffs with 52 points on the season.

With the scoreless draw, Colorado remains six points shy of Real Salt Lake and will set its sights on securing a wild card spot.

The closest scoring chance of the match came in the 84th minute when a Caleb Folan header hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced straight down, inciting controversy regarding whether or not it had crossed the goal line. Despite enthusiastic protests from numerous Colorado players, the assistant referee correctly judged that the ball had remained in play.

Both teams will return to action for their final regular season matches on Oct. 22. Colorado (11-9-13) will head to BC Place to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC while Real Salt Lake (15-11-7) will host the playoff-hopeful Portland Timbers at Rio Tinto Stadium.
