Rapids top 'Caps in come-from-behind win
Oct 23, 2011 - 1:46 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rapids overturned a second-half deficit on Saturday to conclude their regular season campaign with a 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place.Colorado, with a postseason berth already secured, is fighting for position in the wild card race, hoping to host its crucial play-in game at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Saturday's come-from-behind win on the road will certainly go a long way in helping the Rapids carry their momentum into the playoffs.
After a scoreless first half, Alain Rochat gave Vancouver the lead just four minutes into the second period, but Colorado battled back to equalize through Jeff Larentowicz before Wells Thompson scored the winner six minutes from time.
Rochat opened the scoring in the 49th minute from a set piece. The defender sent a free kick into the box where it sailed past a crowd of bodies and past Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens and into the next.
Larentowicz leveled the score just ten minutes later, blasting a low free kick through the wall. Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon positioned himself behind the shot, but the ball trickled between his legs and over the goal line.
Thompson helped Colorado complete the comeback in the 84th minute when a shot from distance deflected off of Jay DeMerit, over Cannon, and into the back of the net.
Colorado heads into the playoffs with a four-game unbeaten streak in regular season play. The Rapids solidified fifth place in the West with a 12-9-13 record, but will need to wait until other league fixtures finish before their opponents are determined.
Vancouver concludes its debut season in Major League Soccer with a last-place finish in the Western Conference, taking just 28 points all season. It finishes with a 6-18-10 record and two-game losing skid.
