Real Salt Lake, Revolution battle to scoreless tie

Jun 3, 2007 - 3:26 AM FOXBORO, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- A week after watching their long undefeated run come to an end, New England Revolution failed to take advantage of the winless Real Salt Lake in a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

New England (5-2-3) entered the match after a 4-3 loss to Kansas City. It was its first loss since Opening Day, spanning seven outings.

Real Salt Lake (0-3-6), however, was searching for its first victory in nine contests this campaign.

Salt Lake's best chance to get on the board in the opening half came when Freddy Adu missed on a breakaway during the 30th minute. Adu was celebrating his 18th birthday.

"The fun begins now ... you can't use the excuse that you're a little kid anymore," Adu said. "I'm a legal adult now."

Adu also expressed his interest about going to play over in Europe, where most of the top soccer clubs are.

"Now I can assess my options, like when to go to Europe," he said. "I'm looking for the right team, the right situation. My agent is making a lot of contacts and hopefully things go the right way."

New England also missed out on its opportunity in the first half as Taylor Twellman took a pass, faked out a defender but could not beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

A flurry of headers by the Revolution ended with a collision between Twellman and Rimando on a crossing pass in the 78th minute.

In the 80th minute, newly acquired Ritchie Kotschau received a red card for tripping just seconds after entering for Salt Lake, which was forced to play a man down for the rest of the game. Kotschau was claimed off waivers on Wednesday.

"Once we went down a man, we knew it would be a struggle for the last 10 to 15," Rimando said.

However, Rimando continued his stellar play in net with his diving save on a shot by Steve Ralston from the top of the box. Ten seconds later, Rimando came up big once again with another diving save to his right.

"It's 100 miles per hour," Rimando said. "You know that they're coming after you, they have a lot of weapons on the top of the field. We keep getting better and better, we got the shutout that we wanted."

Rimando finished with 13 saves.

"Confidence-wise, I feel great," Rimando said. "You always want to get that first shutout and build on that."

New England enjoyed a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal and held Salt Lake without an attempt in the second half.
