Streaking Sporting invades Chivas
Mar 30, 2012 - 10:20 PM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City will try to keep its strong start to the new campaign going when the club travels to The Home Depot Center to face Chivas USA on Sunday.Sporting is the 15th team in MLS history to start a season with three wins from its first three matches, with only one of those sides failing to reach the playoffs.
But after securing a 2-1 win over FC Dallas in its last match the club is mainly concerned on continuing to get better and building on a good run of play to end last season.
"We had a strong end to last year, and we knew we could come out this year playing the same way, or even better," said Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza. "Our goal in the offseason was to get in great shape and continue playing well, and I think game by game we are getting better."
Midfielder Graham Zusi has played a big part in the strong start having recorded at least one assist in each of the first three games, but he feels his success can be attributed more to the high level of play of his team.
"It's easy for me to play well when the team is playing well," said Zusi. "We're high on confidence right now and we know we can get positive results every game."
Sporting has won its last two matches at Chivas, but the club will be coming up against a Goats team coming off of a confidence-building 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake.
Following a pair of 1-0 losses to start the year, rookie Casey Townsend netted the lone goal of the contest, snapping a scoreless streak of 252 minutes for the club.
It was the second match that Townsend was playing in place of the injured Juan Pablo Angel, who is out with concussion symptoms.
"I'm feeling really good right now," Townsend said following his winning goal. "I'm just happy that I could help the team win and when Juan comes back, he's a great player and he'll help the team more and we'll be an even better team for it."
At this point it has yet to be determined when Angel will return to the lineup, leaving Chivas to hope that Townsend will continue to provide goals until the Colombian returns.
