Chivas and Vancouver play out scoreless draw

Jul 8, 2012 - 4:50 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC survived a late push from Chivas USA to hang on for a 0-0 draw at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.

The best stretch of play for either side came in the final 20 minutes of the match for Chivas, with the hosts testing Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon late in the game but failing to find the net for the third time in four games.

Chivas has drawn four of its last six matches, while Vancouver owns three wins from its six previous contests.

The only chance of note in the first half came in the 35th minute from Vancouver's Sebastien Le Toux, who went close with a shot from the middle of the penalty area.

Davide Chiumiento squandered a golden chance in the 55th minute for the Whitecaps when he was played in behind the defense, only to fire over the net with goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to beat.

But the hosts picked up their play over the final 20 minutes and Cannon needed to be sharp to keep out a curling free from Paolo Cardozo.

Ben Zemanski should have scored a few minutes from time to put Chivas ahead, but he knocked the ball over the net from six yards after a good cross from James Riley.

Cannon had to survive one last surge in stoppage time when a scramble in front of his net forced him into action and ended with the 'keeper knocking the ball out over the end line to safety.
