Houston handles New York to go top in East

Aug 4, 2012 - 2:39 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Dynamo continued its great run of form on Friday with a 2-0 win over Red Bull New York at BBVA Compass Stadium that moves the home side to the top of the Eastern Conference.

The Dynamo got started early and never looked back as Jermaine Taylor scored his first MLS goal inside of two minutes and Calen Carr added another shortly before the half-hour mark.

It was one-way traffic for most of the match and the win allows Houston to move two points clear of New York at the top of the East and extend its winning streak to five games.

Houston has made BBVA a fortress so far this season, posting a 7-0-3 mark on home soil, and the hosts got off to a flying start with a goal in less than two minutes.

Brad Davis played a free kick into the penalty area, and after the ball bounced around a bit, it fell to Andre Hainault, whose close-range effort was saved by goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, but ended up being bundled over the goal line from a yard out by Taylor.

The defender then came within inches of doubling his tally when he redirected a corner kick from Davis off the outside of the post.

New York's defense continued to come under pressure and Houston doubled its advantage in the 28th minute when Macoumba Kandji's left-wing cross was headed home at the back post by Carr.

Kandji nearly found the net himself just before the break when he rounded Gaudette inside the penalty area and put a shot on goal, only for New York's Roy Miller to recover in time and block the ball near the goal line.

Will Bruin almost added to the Dynamo's lead in the opening minutes of the second half when he outmuscled Markus Holgersson for a ball inside the area but shot wide from eight yards.

From there, Houston easily controlled the game as New York, which was playing with new Designated Player Tim Cahill, failed to find any traction in the final third.

The loss is the second straight for the Red Bulls, but the two sides will face off once again next Friday in New York.
