Wild ending at RFK highlights United, Union draw

Aug 19, 2012 - 11:49 PM Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Dwayne De Rosario missed a retaken penalty kick in a wild ending at RFK Stadium that included three red cards as nine-man D.C. United tied the 10-man Philadelphia Union, 1-1, on Sunday in MLS.

Brian Carroll scored early for the Union, but Amobi Okugo gifted the goal back on an own goal in the 71st and the last few minutes of the game were marred by a questionable retaken penalty, three reds, and a fight between D.C. players.

De Rosario initially converted the penalty, but referee Mark Geiger ordered it to be retaken although it appeared a Union player had entered the box early.

A shoving match started outside the box after the first penalty, and D.C. lost Branko Boskovic to a red after the scrum. After a delay, De Rosario missed on his second attempt from the spot.

Just seconds later, Emiliano Dudar was sent off for a challenge from behind as United went down to nine men, then Sheanon Williams earned his marching orders for a second yellow card as the Union lost a player.

Williams was involved in a confrontation with United players, including goalie Bill Hamid, as he initially refused to leave the field and, after the whistle, the strangest incident happened between United players.

D.C. defenders Chris Korb and Brandon McDonald shoved each other and needed to be separated.

United (11-8-4) escaped with a draw to extend its home undefeated streak to 11 games. The Union (7-12-3) earned a road result for the fourth time this year.

Carroll opened the scoring when he tucked a ball across the line at the right post in the eighth minute and Freddy Adu preserved the lead when he headed off the line to prevent a United goal just before half.

De Rosario was saved from close range by Union goalie Zac MacMath early in the second half but the rebound found its way into the net, only to be called back on a questionable foul in the 65th minute.

Minutes later, Okugo turned a free kick from Boskovic into his own net from a few yards out, and the Union were lucky to escape with a road point after the wild finish that followed.

D.C. hosts the Chicago Fire on Wednesday without Boskovic and Dudar. The Union return to MLS action Friday without Williams when they host Real Salt Lake.
