Four different scorers fuel Toronto FC past FC Dallas

Jun 17, 2007 - 8:16 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Toronto FC gave its fans at BMO Field something to remember it by.

Rookie Maurice Edu and Danny Dichio scored three minutes apart in the first half, and Carl Robinson and Jeff Cunningham added second-half tallies as Toronto defeated FC Dallas, 4-0, on Sunday.

The match was Toronto's last home date before six straight on the road. Due to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the team does not play at BMO Field again until July 25, when Premiership club Aston Villa visits for an exhibition.

"We're a good team and we're getting better every day," Toronto coach Mo Johnston said. "I'm happy with the upcoming road streak to be able to get the win at home. It's our last one and to be on the road for six games (so) it's important to get 3 points tonight. But with this group of guys, I'm comfortable with winning on the road."

Edu, a midfielder, scored his second goal of the season, beating Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala in the 21st minute.

After the goal, Edu received a yellow card for excessive celebration, but as play resumed, members of the Dallas contingent continued the argument. Toronto collected possession and three minutes later, Dichio netted his fourth of the season, assisted by Robinson on a direct free kick.

"It was definitely worth it," Edu said of removing his shirt after his goal.

Robinson scored his first goal of the season from inside the goal area in the 65th minute, assisted by Kevin Goldthwaite and Andy Welsh.

Cunningham, who nearly scored in the 56th minute when his blast hit the crossbar, tallied his fifth of the season in the 92nd minute to cap the scoring.

"It was an important win," Robinson said. "After the 2-0 halftime result, it became a question of whether or not we were going to sit on our lead or keep going for more goals. We decided to utilize the fast breaks as best we could."

Toronto (4-6-1, 13 points) did not show any rust after returning to action after a 10-day layoff and playing without Greg Sutton, defensemen Chris Pozniak and Adam Braz, who are representing Team Canada in its quest to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Toronto's last game was a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls on June 6.

Western Division-leading FC Dallas (7-6-1, 22 points) had the better of play in the beginning before Toronto took over.

"I felt that we were the better team in the first 20 minutes," Dallas coach Steve Morrow said. "We created chances but didn't take them. The opposition had three chances and we got punished on two of them. In the second half, we didn't have the energy or the legs."

The expansion franchise outshot Dallas, 13-10. Toronto goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic was only required to make four saves, while Sala had six for Dallas.
