Fire rally against Impact to retain second place
Sep 16, 2012 - 2:34 AM Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Fire went a goal down but stormed back to earn a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Impact at Toyota Park on Saturday, the club's sixth win from its last seven league games.Marco Di Vaio gave the Impact the lead, but Sherjill MacDonald leveled the score before Alex and Alvaro Fernandez broke through to seal all three points for the Fire.
Chicago (15-8-5) retains second place in the Eastern Conference with 50 points on the season, moving to within one point of first-place Sporting Kansas City.
Montreal (12-15-3) loses its second match on the bounce to stay put on 39 points through 30 games, five points shy of a playoff spot.
Montreal went in front in the 20th minute when Hassoun Camara's long header released Di Vaio through on goal. The Italian wriggled free of a Fire defender and fired a left-footed shot past Sean Johnson for his fifth goal of the season.
Chicago leveled the score before halftime though. Jalil Anibaba's cross was met by MacDonald, and the Dutch striker nodded the delivery past Troy Perkins at the far post.
The Fire completed the comeback at the hour-mark when Alex collected a pass from Fernandez and fired a shot into the upper corner off the half-volley for his second goal of the season.
Fernandez chipped in with a goal of his own to put the win on ice, slotting a one-time effort just inside the near post off of a centering pass from Chris Rolfe.
