Smith's late goal sees Rapids draw 'Caps

Sep 24, 2012 - 1:34 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jamie Smith struck four minutes from time to help the Colorado Rapids salvage a point in a 2-2 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Sunday.

Omar Cummings had given the visiting Rapids the lead in the 34th minute, following up on Martin Rivero's shot off the post and slotting the rebound home from a very tough angle.

Vancouver applied a great deal of pressure and eventually took the lead with two goals in the span of four second-half minutes.

Alain Rochat equalized in the 64th minute when he redirected a low cross from Gershon Koffie into the back of the net from close range.

The 'Caps went in front shortly after as Kenny Miller grabbed his second goal of the season, latching on to Bryan Robson's through ball and chipping a shot over Matt Pickens.

But Colorado was able to save face and steal a hard-fought road point as Smith capitalized on some sloppy defensive play in the 86th minute and fired a shot past Brad Knighton.

Vancouver (10-12-8) goes two points clear of FC Dallas as it clings to the final postseason berth with 38 points on the season. Colorado (9-18-3) improves to 30 points, bouncing back from a 2-0 defeat to the Los Angeles Galaxy in its last outing.
