Davis scores three goals to spark Dynamo

Jun 22, 2007 - 4:43 AM HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Brad Davis broke out of his scoring drought in a big way.

Davis scored three goals to power the Houston Dynamo to a 4-0 romp over Chivas USA on Thursday night.

Brian Mullen also had a goal for the Dynamo (6-5-1), who leapfrogged Chivas for second place in the Western Conference.

In scoring his first goals of the season, Davis recorded his first career hat trick. The three goals were the most scored by a Houston player since Brian Ching tallied four times in the franchise's inaugural game on April 2, 2006.

"I can't really describe it. I keep saying it's been a long time coming since I've scored a goal, and tonight three came, so it's a pretty good feeling for me," Davis said. "We needed guys to step up and score. Normally, I'm on the other end of the ball serving it in, but tonight I wanted to score some goals. It was a good night for me."

Mullen's goal in the sixth minute gave the Dynamo a 1-0 lead they carried into halftime before Davis went to work in the second half.

Davis scored three times in a 20-minute span, capping the outburst with a penalty kick in the 75 minute as Houston handed Chivas the worst loss in its history.

"Congratulations to Brad for his first career hat trick," Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said. "His first goal was absolutely stunning. But, I think he played and moved on the goal like he did, where he chases the ball down like he did, shows the mood that the guys brought to the game tonight."

Chivas (5-4-2) had to play a man down after Shavar Thomas drew a red card in the 66th minute with the Dynamo leading, 2-0.

Zack Wells made two saves to record the shutout for Houston, which had an 11-2 edge in shots on goal.

"I think, obviously, the better team won outright," Chivas coach Preki said. "From the first minute of the game, you could tell that they were the team that wanted it more than us, and they came for 90 minutes."

Brad Guzan had seven saves for Chivas.

"We didn't win tonight, and we didn't deserve to win," Guzan said. "I don't think we played particularly well as a team, from top to bottom. It was just one of those nights where we didn't come ready to play, and right from the get-go they were ready. We just weren't prepared for this game."
