SKC, Fire draw at Sporting Park
Mar 16, 2013 - 9:48 PM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City and Chicago Fire battled to a goalless draw on Saturday at Sporting Park. The hosts had the better of the play in the first half as well as the first great chance of the match 13 minutes in when Graham Zusi ripped a hard strike from outside the box, but Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson was there for the save.
Both sides managed just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but it was Kansas City that had a fantastic opportunity just second into the second period when Seth Sinovic collected a ball on the left flank and fired a left- footed shot from a tough angle, but it just missed the near post.
The home side had another excellent chance in the 54th minute when Paulo Nagamura blasted a long shot on goal from outside the penalty area that was parried away by Johnson, but he left a rebound and Claudio Bieler got a head to it on the volley, but nodded it over the bar to keep the sides on level terms.
Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen had to make several saves in the final minutes as Chicago had a few chances to steal three points, but neither side was able to find a winning goal.
Kansas City has not won in its past two matches after opening the season with a 3-1 triumph at Philadelphia and will look to get back on the winning track on March 30 when they host the Montreal Impact.
Chicago meanwhile, remains winless and goalless in three matches this season and will shoot for its first victory of the season at Toyota Park next Sunday against Chivas USA.
