Wallace rescues Timbers against Seattle
Mar 17, 2013 - 2:53 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Rodney Wallace's spectacular headed goal in the 90th minute salvaged a point for the Portland Timbers in a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders on Saturday at CenturyLink Field.Coming off an improbable 3-2 aggregate win over Mexican side Tigres during the week in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, the Sounders had the better of the play early on as Eddie Johnson struck for the Sounders in the 13th minute to give the home side the lead.
Steve Zakuani played facilitator on the Seattle goal as he chased down a ball on the left flank and sent a cross into the box for Johnson to volley past Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, sending the CenturyLink crowd of over 40,000 into a frenzy.
Seattle held the lead for most of the second half and received a boost of energy when new Designated Player Obafemi Martins made his debut in a Sounders shirt 20 minutes from time.
With Martins on the field, the home side appeared on its way to a victory over its Cascadia Cup rivals, but Wallace had other ideas as he got his head to a hopeful cross into the box from Andrew Jean-Baptiste and nodded it into the top right corner, leaving Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning with no chance for a save.
The result deprives the Sounders of their first win of the 2013 campaign, and they will go for their first victory next Saturday against San Jose, while Portland will take its road point and shoot for a three-point effort on March 30 against Colorado.
