Donovan nets two as Galaxy defeat Fire

Jul 5, 2007 - 6:03 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- A shutout could not have come much easier for Joe Cannon.

Landon Donovan scored two goals on penalty kicks and Cannon recorded his third shutout of the season - not making a save - as the Los Angeles Galaxy cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Fire.

Donovan's first goal came in the 16th minute after a charging Kyle Martino was brought down by Chris Armas to create the penalty opportunity, which Donovan converted to give the Galaxy a 1-0 lead.

Donovon made it 2-0 on another penalty kick after a questionable foul was called on Ivan Guerrero. The 25-year-old Donovan blasted the shot into the right corner past Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch.

"When a defender puts his foot out and I can't get by, that's up to the ref to call," Martino said. "When I make a run in the box I'm determined to get through, and it doesn't always go your way."

Cannon picked up his 54th career shutout after the Fire managed just two shots - neither of which was on goal.

"I think we did all right up until we got to the final third of the field," Fire coach Denis Hamlett said. "It's no secret that we're having a hard time scoring goals and it showed tonight."

Chicago failed to get a shot until the 70th minute when C.J. Brown's attempt sailed wide right.

"We worked hard this week on certain things and I think we saw the result of that tonight," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop. "Defensively you saw what we've been trying to achieve, to limit their possibilities in front of goal."

Busch, who was making his 2007 debut with the Fire, made six saves.

"We've got five games in 15 days and that's a lot of work for anybody," said Busch, who was selected over Matt Pickens. "We're lucky that we have this option. I'm really just hoping for a healthy year after the issues I've had with my knees."

Carlos Pavon, who finished as the top scorer in the Gold Cup with five goals in four games, entered in the 57th minute to make his MLS debut. The native of Honduras had two shots on goal.
