Montreal holds off New York to stay perfect
Mar 23, 2013 - 10:35 PM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Marco Di Vaio's 14th-minute goal was enough to keep the Montreal Impact's perfect start intact as the club held off Red Bull New York, 1-0, at Olympic Stadium on Saturday.Montreal has won its first four games of the season to sit atop the Eastern Conference, while New York head coach Mike Petke is still searching for his first win in charge of the club.
The Impact got off to a great start after 14 minutes when Patrice Bernier split two defenders with a brilliant through ball, allowing Di Vaio to get in behind the defense and slot his shot past goalkeeper Luis Robles.
Montreal seemed content to sit back and defend for a bit after the goal, but Troy Perkins had to be alert to keep out a close-range effort from New York's Jonny Steele.
Andres Romero nearly doubled the lead in the 64th, but he lifted a shot just over the crossbar from inside the area, while Di Vaio made a mess of a great chance by failing to connect with a cross from eight yards with Robles at his mercy.
Yet with 15 minutes to play, New York's hopes took a major hit as Brandon Barklage was sent off for picking up his second yellow card after a foul on Bernier, allowing the Impact to see out the rest of the match.
All four of Montreal's wins this season have come by one goal, while New York has been held without a goal in its last two games.
