Wondo's rocket propels San Jose past Seattle
Mar 24, 2013 - 4:46 AM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Wondolowski's first-half strike was enough to lift the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium.San Jose settled for a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew last week courtesy of a late equalizer from Justin Morrow and Saturday's result extends the Earthquakes unbeaten run in league play to a modest three consecutive matches.
Both sides had ample opportunities to get on the board in the opening 45 minutes and San Jose was able to find the only goal of the match right on the stroke of halftime.
Wondolowski collected a nice feed from rookie Adam Jahn just outside the Seattle penalty area. He quickly turned and took a few touches to his right before ripping a right-footed rocket off the inside of the far post and past Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning for the 1-0 edge.
After the break, Seattle pressed for the equalizer and had a phenomenal chance in the 75th minute when Osvaldo Alonso let a shot rip from 25 yards out that was stopped by San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch. Busch left a nice rebound in front of goal, but recovered to stop the onrushing David Estrada to keep his side in front.
The Sounders had one final excellent chance two minutes from time when Alonso cracked a free kick on goal from outside the box, but Busch was in position to make the save, and preserve three points for the Earthquakes.
Seattle, meanwhile, has yet to win a league match this season, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with just one point from three matches.
