Galaxy, TFC battle to draw in thriller at BMO

Mar 30, 2013 - 8:27 PM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Jose Villarreal's strike in second-half stoppage time salvaged a point for the Los Angeles Galaxy in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Toronto FC on Saturday at BMO Field.

Los Angeles struck first 17 minutes into the contest with a bit of luck when Marcelo Sarvas fired a shot on net that looked to be well wide of the left post, but Mike Magee was on the far post and slotted it past Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik for the early 1-0 lead and his league-leading fifth goal of the season.

But Toronto battled back to put the sides on level terms in the 29th minute when Robert Earnshaw intercepted a poor back pass by Los Angeles defender Leonardo, rounded goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini and fired it into the net.

Los Angeles captain Landon Donovan came on in the 60th minute for his first action of the season after an extended break and had a chance to score on his first touch, but the shot was right at Bendik.

Substitute Luis Silva played catalyst 12 minutes from time to give Toronto the lead when he collected a ball on the left flank, danced into the Los Angeles penalty area and sent a cross into the box that was tapped home by Osorio to make it 2-1 for the home side.

The two-time defending champions fought back though and used some set-piece magic to equalize in stoppage time as Villarreal got on the end of a free kick in the box and ripped it past Bendik with a spectacular volley to secure a point for his side.

The result leaves Los Angeles with eight points from four matches, while Toronto has four points from four games.
