Henry lifts Red Bulls over Union
Mar 30, 2013 - 10:10 PM Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Thierry Henry's second-half strike handed Red Bull New York its first win of the season on Saturday, a 2-1 result over the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena.Henry missed New York's last match, 1-0 loss to the Montreal Impact, due to an MCL sprain, and began Saturday's game on the bench, but found the back of the net for his first tally of the season nine minutes from time to secure three points for his side.
Both teams had ample chances in the first 45 minutes, but New York struck first in the 55th minute when Juninho ripped a shot on goal from outside the box that was defected past Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath by Dax McCarty for the first goal of the day.
But Philadelphia battled back to put the sides on level terms in the 63rd minute through substitute Conor Casey, who got his head to a long throw-in from Sheanon Williams and nodded it past New York netminder Luis Robles.
The Red Bulls had a fantastic chance a bit later as Jonny Steele broke in down the left flank and fired a shot on net, but MacMath came out to make a spectacular save.
MacMath was unable to duplicate his great save nine minutes from time however when Henry controlled a quick cross from Peguy Luyindula and volleyed it into the net to give New York the lead.
Philadelphia had a bit of time to find an equalizer as the fourth official's board showed four minutes of extra time, but the tying goal never materialized and New York held on for a vital three points.
