Johnson's double propels Timbers past Dynamo

Apr 7, 2013 - 4:54 AM Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Ryan Johnson netted a second-half double on Saturday as the Portland Timbers knocked off the Houston Dynamo, 2-0, at JELD- WEN Field.

Portland entered the match winless on the season and with only three points from four matches, but Johnson roared to life in the second 45 minutes to make sure his team claimed three points in front of a raucous crowd of over 20,000.

But it was the traveling side that had the better of the play in the first half with a great chance in the 32nd minute as Cam Weaver collected a cross in the box from Andrew Driver and turned it on goal, but the shot sailed over the bar.

Both sides had ample chances over the remainder of the first half, but the clubs went into the break scoreless.

Portland broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Diego Chara whipped a cross into the Houston penalty area from the right flank and Johnson was there to direct it past Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall for the 1-0 lead.

Johnson grabbed his second of the night in the 73rd minute after he was put through by a great cutting ball from Darlington Nagbe, took a few touches into the penalty area and fired it into the top left corner to make it 2-0 for the home side.

The victory pushes Portland up to six points on the season, while Houston remains in third place in the Eastern Conference with nine points from five games.
