Jones pulls Galaxy even with Wizards

Jul 8, 2007 - 6:10 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- Cobi Jones scored two goals to help the Los Angeles Galaxy to 2-2 tie with the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night.

The veteran Jones entered the game in the 55th minute and immediately infused some life into a Los Angeles attack that seemed to lose steam after Kansas City scored two goals early in the second half.

"I think he's probably the best sub in the league," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said of Jones. "He reads the game very quickly. He has problems with his heels, that's why he's not a 90-minute player. He came very close to winning this game, and he has a great soccer mind."

Jones, who is playing in his final season after being one of the charter members of MLS, was in the right place at the right time to score in the 61st minute for the Galaxy (3-5-4).

"It makes it a very difficult situation knowing that you're two goals down and you need to create opportunities and chances up front, and fortunately we did that," Jones said.

After Carlos Pavon's shot glanced off the post, Jones collected the rebound and fired it past Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Jones hooked up with Landon Donovan on his second tally, collecting a pass from the All-Star in the 75th minute. Jones again deposited the ball into the net - this time from 18 yards out - to forge a tie.

"I hope it changes the attitude of this team and shows that we can score and create chances whenever we want to and win games," Jones said. "That's something that we all need to believe in."

"From a spectator's point of view, I thought it was an entertaining game to watch," Yallop said. "From our point of view, it was obviously a positive coming from two goals down. I think a draw is fair. We came back and almost won it."

The Wizards' apparent offensive indifference marked the first half, as the absence of striker Eddie Johnson - who is with the U.S. National Team - seemed to leave the team without a go-to scorer. Kansas City managed just two shots in the opening half, neither on goal.

The Wizards (6-5-4), whose winless streak reached six games, opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Defender Jack Jewsbury lifted a pass into the box from 40 yards out, and Yura Movsisyan collected it behind two defenders.

Movsisyan sidestepped to his right and fired a shot between the defenders and past Galaxay goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

Davy Arnaud pushed the advantage to 2-0 four minutes later with an unassisted tally.
