Chivas falls at RSL after another missed PK
Apr 21, 2013 - 3:09 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - For the second straight week, Chivas USA missed a penalty kick and suffered a 1-0 defeat, this time to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday.Javier Morales tallied the lone goal of the contest in the 53rd minute for RSL, but it came after Chivas midfielder Edgar Mejia failed to convert a 35th- minute penalty kick.
Salt Lake won for just the second time in seven games, while Chivas has lost its last two after a promising start to the season.
The home side created a good chance after six minutes when Olmes Garcia rattled the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area, with Morales wasting a good opportunity from inside the box nine minutes later.
Chivas didn't create much offensively, but RSL's Ned Grabavoy was called for handling the ball inside his own area in the 35th, allowing Mejia to step to the spot.
But Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando dove to his left to parry the shot, continuing Chivas' struggles from 12 yards.
Garcia hit the crossbar again for RSL in the 53rd, but Morales finally broke the deadlock less than a minute later when he turned a header inside the left post from Alvaro Saborio's cross.
Morales tried to double the lead in the 64th, but he saw his shot clip the post, while Saborio missed the net from a good position in the closing minutes as Chivas ran out of ideas in the offensive third.
