Impact leave it late against RSL
May 11, 2013 - 8:23 PM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Matteo Ferrari's first career goal in stoppage time handed the Montreal Impact a dramatic 3-2 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Saputo Stadium.Real Salt Lake drew first blood in the high-scoring affair with a little bit of luck in the seventh minute when Lovel Palmer ripped a shot on target from well outside the penalty area and the shot deflected off the leg of Ferrari and past Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins for the 1-0 lead.
But the home side drew level in the 39th minute when Justin Mapp ran in behind the RSL backline via a nice feed from Jeb Brovsky and lofted a cross into the box where Felipe Martins was there to hammer it home to make it 1-1.
The visitors grabbed the lead back in the 77th minute when Kyle Beckerman bagged his first goal of the season, but the Impact hit back just three minutes later to make it 2-2 when Marco Di Vaio slipped through the defense and knocked it off the left post and in behind Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
Ferrari then made amends for his earlier blunder when he got on the end of a loose ball in the box following a corner kick and fired it home just moments before the final whistle to give his club a victory in dramatic fashion.
The result pulls Montreal into a tie for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with New York Red Bulls and Houston Dynamo on 20 points, while RSL remains in second place in the West on 17 points.
