Revs, Red Bulls settle for a point
May 12, 2013 - 1:47 AM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution and Red Bull New York scored in quick succession at Gillette Stadium on Saturday as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw.Diego Fagundez got the Revs off the mark early in the second half, but his opener was quickly canceled out by Lloyd Sam a minute later.
New York (6-4-3) moves into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference by improving to 21 points, one point clear of the Houston Dynamo ahead of their clash with Sporting Kansas City on Sunday. While the Red Bulls managed to extend their unbeaten run in league play to five games, they remain without a road win against the Revs since 2002.
New England (2-4-4) climbs to 10 points on the season, keeping the club in seventh place in the East.
The Revs grabbed the lead in the 54th minute when Fagundez had his shot cleared off the line only to convert from the second attempt.
New York managed to get back on equal terms only a minute later, though. Andre Akpan, making his first start for the Red Bulls, threaded a pass into the path of Sam, allowing the winger fire a low shot past Bobby Shuttleworth at the back post.
New England had the better run of play in the final half-hour, but the home side failed to break down New York's organized defensive unit.
The Revs will look to rebound and end their three-game winless run next Saturday with a trip to BBVA Compass Stadium to take on the Dynamo.
New York returns to Red Bull Arena for a three-game homestand, beginning with a monumental clash against the Los Angeles Galaxy on May 19.
