Rapids aim to continue dominance over Chivas
May 24, 2013 - 8:02 PM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rapids will hope to extend their unbeaten run to five games on Saturday when the club welcomes struggling Chivas USA to Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids return home after a 1-1 draw at the San Jose Earthquakes last weekend, while Chivas is winless in its last six matches after a heavy 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Real Salt Lake.
Colorado appeared poised to collect three points at San Jose, but a Marvin Chavez goal 12 minutes from time denied the Rapids.
"It's a good result. Getting a point on the road is always good, especially against a team like San Jose," said Rapids midfielder Nathan Sturgis. "But being up 1-0 late in the game, it's always disappointing to give up that tying goal. We knew we could have had the three points, but there are a lot of positives to take out of a game like this."
The goal that Chavez scored was just the second given up by the Rapids in the last four games, and Colorado will be hoping to collect another clean sheet on Saturday against a Chivas side that has been held scoreless in four of its last six matches.
Chivas has been outscored 11-1 in the last three games, and the confidence of the club has undoubtedly been shaken.
Defender Bobby Burling is anxious to turn the page, and he feels that if the side stays together they will be able to turn things around.
"The last three weeks have not been easy," said Burling. "They've definitely not been what we've worked for in training. Working that hard all week to step out [on the field] and get punished like that is never good. We just have to stick together and go forward. Every team in this league has to go through these spells and the quicker you get out of them the better. We need to just turn this page quickly."
Chivas has not had much success against the Rapids in recent years, posting a 0-7-2 mark against Colorado in the last nine meetings between the two sides.
The last time Chivas beat the Rapids was March 21, 2009, but goalkeeper Dan Kennedy knows it is important not to let the poor run of results carry over into Saturday's match.
"Confidence plays a big role in this, and we need to make sure we still have that, and we don't let these results get our personalities down. We gotta work through this," Kennedy said.
