Di Vaio's hat trick too much as Montreal holds off Union
May 26, 2013 - 1:07 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Marco Di Vaio scored early and often as he recorded a first-half hat trick to lead the Montreal Impact to a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Union at Saputo Stadium.Di Vaio got started almost immediately when he scored his first goal inside of two minutes from an Andrew Wenger cross.
The Union have a clinical finisher as well in the form of Jack McInerney, and he tallied his ninth goal of the campaign a few minutes later to level the match after a pass from Michael Farfan.
Montreal restored its lead in the 28th when a well-weighted chip from Justin Mapp found Di Vaio in behind the Union defense and he easily slotted his shot past goalkeeper Zac MacMath.
The hat trick was complete four minutes later with Andres Romero playing provider with a cross from the end line that Di Vaio volleyed home.
Antoine Hoppenot pulled the Union to within a goal in the 69th when his attempted cross from the right wing sailed over the head of Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins and inside the far post, only for Wenger to head home Felipe's corner kick five minutes later to make it 4-2 to the home side.
Sebastien Le Toux handed the Union a lifeline with a goal in the 85th, but Montreal rookie Blake Smith tallied his first MLS goal shortly before the final whistle to put the result away.
