Union cruise past Crew at PPL Park

Jun 6, 2013 - 1:33 AM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Union ran rampant in the first half at PPL Park on Wednesday to cruise to a 3-0 defeat of the Columbus Crew.

The two sides traded blows until the Union exploded for three goals in the span of six minutes in the opening period.

Brian Carroll grabbed the first in the 25th minute when his shot from distance took a deflection on its way past Andy Gruenebaum.

Carroll helped create the second goal four minutes later by nodding Sebastien Le Toux's corner kick to the back post where Sheanon Williams was arriving to fire it home with an acrobatic finish.

Philadelphia capped the sublime passage in the 31st when Le Toux collected possession on the right flank and delivered a superb cross that Conor Casey buried with a powerful header.

A scoreless second half saw the Union (6-5-4) claim its fourth shutout of the season to go level with the Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City on 22 points apiece.

Columbus (4-5-5) is winless in its last three league outings to remain on 17 points for the season.
