Portland tops FCD to extend unbeaten run

Jun 15, 2013 - 11:13 PM Portland, OR (Sports Network) - The Portland Timbers extended their unbeaten run in league play to 13 games following a 1-0 defeat of FC Dallas at Jeld-Wen Field on Saturday.

Darlington Nagbe produced the lone goal of the affair, scoring in the 52nd minute to lift Portland (6-1-8) to 26points, two points back of first-place Dallas (8-3-4).

Portland nearly broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Diego Valeri got on the end of a cross from the left flank, but the Argentine's header into the ground bounced up and grazed the crossbar on its way out of play.

The Timbers came even closer to getting off the mark six minutes before the break but failed to take advantage of a scramble in the box as Raul Fernandez parried a shot away on the goal line.

The home side eventually got on the board thanks to a brilliant effort from Nagbe, who collected a pass from Kalif Alhassan early in the second half, turned his defender and curled a superb shot into the far upper corner.

Portland held on to Nagbe's strike to take all three points, claiming a fifth consecutive clean sheet at home.
