Casey's double powers Union past Red Bulls

Jun 23, 2013 - 11:36 PM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - Conor Casey scored on each side of the interval on Sunday as the Philadelphia Union topped 10-man Red Bull New York, 3-0, at PPL Park.

Antoine Hoppenot also scored for Philadelphia, which stretched its winning streak on home soil to three consecutive matches and pulled level with New York on 25 points with a game in hand.

New York, meanwhile, came off a 22-day break in its league schedule and was missing some key pieces in defender Jamison Olave and midfielders Tim Cahill and Juninho.

The Union opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Philadelphia defender Sheanon Williams whipped a cross into the New York penalty area for an unmarked Casey, who nodded it past Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Things became more difficult for New York in the 28th minute when Lloyd Sam was shown a straight red card by referee Baldomero Toledo for a rash two- footed challenge on Union winger Danny Cruz.

After the sending off, New York carried the play for a large majority of the first half but could not find the net and went into the locker room down a goal.

The Union made it 2-0 in the 64th minute when Robles spilled a shot from the right side of the box by Jack McInerney and Casey was there to clean it up, firing home his eighth career goal against New York.

Philadelphia then finished off a spectacular performance in the 88th minute when Sebastien Le Toux sent a low pass into the box to a wide-open Hoppenot, who ripped it home for his second goal of the season.

The result gives the Union their first win over New York since a 1-0 victory at PPL Park on April 9, 2011.
