Smith's goal lifts Revolution over Crew

Oct 15, 2006 - 3:46 AM FOXBORO, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Khanon Smith has great timing.

Smith scored his first goal of the season to help lift the New England Revolution to a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew.

The victory clinched a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference for the Revolution (12-8-12) and insured home-field advantage on the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs. The Crew fell to 8-15-9.

Smith scored the game-winner off a setup from Clint Dempsey and Steve Ralston at the 88-minute mark.

New England goalkeeper Matt Reis made two saves while Columbus' Andy Gruenebaum finished with seven.
