DCU faces tough test at Seattle

Jul 2, 2013 - 6:43 PM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - D.C. United will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday as the club faces a tough test against the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field.

After securing just their second win of the season on June 22 in a 1-0 win over San Jose, and topping New England in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup, United had reason to be optimistic.

But they slipped back to their losing ways on Saturday following a lackluster 1-0 defeat at RFK Stadium to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The lone tally of the match came minutes into the second half when Vancouver's Matt Watson was clipped in the penalty area by onrushing United goalkeeper Bill Hamid, resulting in a penalty kick for the visitors.

Camilo stepped up to the spot and calmly buried it for his ninth goal of the season to give his club the lead.

Following the goal, United created plenty of chances, finishing the match with a season-high 23 attempts on goal, but were unable to breakthrough and suffered their 12th loss of the season.

"I had a group of men that fought their tails off and they're gutted," D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen said of his team's effort. "I asked them to give me everything this week. I pushed guys to the limit with three games and an Open Cup [match], and they gave it to me today. They gave me everything they had."

Seattle meanwhile, is in need of a bounce-back performance after a 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on June 22.

The Sounders failed to generate many offensive chances against RSL and garnered just two shots on goal as Kyle Beckerman and Robbie Findley scored five minutes apart for the home side.

"I didn't think it was that bad for us in the first half. I know we didn't have any shots on goal, but I thought overall we forced them to turn the ball over," Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said.

"But at the end of the day, goals change games. So they get the goal right with about five minutes to go in the first half and Beckerman hits a great shot. It was a bad free kick for us to give up and then we give a goal away at the beginning of the second half. Goals change games. From that point on the second half I thought they pretty much dominated us. At that point I don't think we made smart decisions or played well and they were the better team for sure."
