Bernier's PK helps Impact draw Chivas USA

Jul 8, 2013 - 1:16 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Patrice Bernier's late penalty kick rescued a point for the Montreal Impact in a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA on Sunday at Saputo Stadium.

Chivas USA struck first through a 55th-minute tally by Eric Avila, but it was canceled out by Bernier's spot kick 10 minutes from time to extend the Goats' winless run in league play to 13 consecutive matches.

Both teams had ample opportunities to break the deadlock over the first 45 minutes but failed to find the back of the net as the sides went into the break on level terms.

But the Goats opened the scoring ten minutes after the interval when Jose Villafana collected a loose ball in the Montreal penalty area and ripped a shot on goal. The shot smashed the post and came back to the feet of Avila, who calmly buried it in behind Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Montreal got back into the match 11 minutes from time when Sanna Nyassi was taken down in the box by Chivas USA defender Mario de Luna, resulting in a penalty kick.

Bernier stepped up and sent Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy the wrong way with a nice stutter step before firing it into the bottom right corner for his second goal of the campaign.

The hosts nearly had the winner with just minutes on the clock when Bernier sent a nice ball down the right flank to Andrew Wenger, but the second-year man sent his shot just wide of the far post.

The result sees the Impact pull one point ahead of Sporting Kansas City on 31 points, while the Goats remain at the foot of the Western Conference with 14 points.
