Union, Timbers share the spoils at PPL

Jul 21, 2013 - 2:22 AM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Union extended their home unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches on Saturday after battling to a scoreless draw with the Portland Timbers at PPL Park.

Portland had the better of the play early on and earned the first good scoring chance of the night in the 24th minute when Ryan Johnson got free down the left side and put a shot on goal that was parried away by a very busy Zac MacMath.

Philadelphia's best opportunity came in the 37th minute when Danny Cruz worked his way into the box on the left wing and ripped a hard shot on goal that was pushed away by Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

The start of the second half was delayed due to lightning, but once it got underway it was the Union who came out with more energy.

Philadelphia had another excellent chance in the 76th when Conor Casey smashed a shot that appeared earmarked for the top right corner, but Ricketts got to it with a strong right hand.

The Union pressed hard in the late stages and almost snuck out with three points when substitute Leo Fernandez let a shot go from the edge of the box that looked to be heading for the bottom right corner, but it stung the post and rolled out of play.

The result sees Philadelphia remain in fourth place in the East on 31 points, while Portland stays in second place in the West on 34 points.
