Hoppenot sends 10-man 'Caps to first home loss
Jul 28, 2013 - 2:03 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Antoine Hoppenot netted the only goal of the night as the Philadelphia Union held on for a 1-0 result over 10-man Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday at BC Place.Coming off a hard-fought scoreless draw at home to the Portland Timbers, the Union collected their second consecutive clean sheet and dealt Vancouver its first home loss of the season.
Things were physical early on and the momentum swing in the favor of the visitors just eight minutes in when Vancouver defender Jun-Marques Davidson was shown a straight red card for a head-butt on Philadelphia's Keon Daniel.
Despite being a man down, Vancouver had the better of the opportunities over the first 45 minutes. 'Caps captain Kenny Miller had several quality chances, but his finishing was just a bit off and the clubs went into the break on level terms.
With the extra man, Philadelphia slowly began to take control of the match in the second half, and finally found its goal five minutes from time.
Substitute Aaron Wheeler worked his way through the Whitecaps back four and slid a back-heel pass to Hoppenot, who hit the top right corner of the net, leaving 'Caps goalkeeper Brad Knighton with no chance for a save.
The result sees the Union rise to 34 points from 22 matches, while Vancouver remains on 32 points.
