Rapids claim Rocky Mountain Cup after draw with RSL
Aug 4, 2013 - 3:41 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Rocky Mountain Cup will be returning to Colorado for the first time since 2006 after the Rapids earned a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday. The Rapids entered the game needing only a draw to regain the trophy, but Ned Grabavoy fired RSL in front inside of two minutes.
Deshorn Brown answered back seven minutes later for the Rapids after some sloppy defending by the visitors, and then things got really interesting.
Robbie Findley dribbled into the penalty area and was brought down by Drew Moor, earning his side a penalty kick.
But before Alvaro Saborio could step to the spot to take it, referee Fotis Bazakos ordered both teams to the locker room in the 21st minute because of lightning.
After a 62-minute delay, both sides returned to the field and Saborio fired the spot kick past goalkeeper Clint Irwin, putting RSL up 2-1 at halftime.
Salt Lake came into the match three points clear of the Rapids at the top of the Western Conference, but Jaime Castrillon tallied his first goal of the season 20 minutes from time after a pass from Chris Klute to level the match.
RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando was responsible for keeping his team level as he produced a handful of fine stops, including one in the 84th on Tony Cascio's long-range effort.
The Rapids not only claimed the Rocky Mountain Cup on Saturday, but the result also extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.
